EARLY WIN GIVES RAPIDS CHANCE TO STEP UP BLAST FINALS DAY PREPARATIONS

worcestershire rapids will use today to hone their skills for vitality blast finals day via an unexpected chance for an extra practice session.

the county were due to take on glamorgan on the final day of the specsavers county championship encounter at New Road.

but worcestershire’s excellent 155 run success over the welsh county with more than a day to spare has created an additional window of opportunity to prepare for the edgbaston showpiece.

the players will swap the red ball for white ball as the countdown continues to the semi-final meeting with notts outlaws on september 21 – with the winners meeting either derbyshire falcons or essex eagles in the final.

first team coach alex gidman confirmed: “we will have a good white ball practice on friday which is a good additional opportunity.

“we will make the most of that and get an extra practice session in which perhaps we wouldn’t have had.”

gidman expects the rapids to be at virtually full strength for finals day with brett d’oliveira (thumb) and wayne parnell (illness) set to be available.

he said: “they’ve got a bit of work to do first, particularly brett who has had a broken thumb. he needs to make sure he is comfortable and full of confidence.

“but it looks we are not going to be far away from full strength which is really exciting for everyone.”
