Worcestershire 2024 overseas player Nathan Smith has been awarded his first central contract by New Zealand for the 2024-2025 campaign.
Smith picked up 27 wickets in seven Vitality County Championship matches for Worcestershire and also made important lower order contributions with the bat, including three half centuries
It followed on from him being voted New Zealand’s domestic player of the year with 33 wickets in Wellington’s Plunket Shield success last winter.
Worcestershire Head Coach Alan Richardson had described Smith as “a star in the making” when he departed Visit Worcestershire New Road last month because of a hamstring injury and is delighted to see him earn a first central contract.
He said: “Really chuffed for Nathan and is a testament to the success he has enjoyed with us and Wellington over past 12 months.
“He is a very ambitious and driven player and made such a great impact for us both on and off the field.
“He put in 100 per cent every game and was a pleasure to work with. He was a skilful operator with the ball, made valuable runs and was involved in some crucial run outs.”
New Zealand Head Coach Gary Stead said: “Nathan has been on our radar for a while having been a significant performer in domestic cricket for some time.
“He has been particularly impressive in red ball cricket and we think he has the skills to be successful in international cricket when he gets the chance.”
Smith said: “Playing for Worcestershire this summer has been another chapter in my cricketing education with the different conditions and challenges that County Cricket presents.
“I loved my time at New Road and I hope to come back in the future.”
Smith could soon be opposition to England who visit New Zealand for three Tests before the end of the year.
