Worcestershire’s Basil D’Oliveira was an iconic sporting hero both on and off the pitch and did more than any other sportsman to bring about change in South Africa; and The D’Oliveira Foundation aims to honour the memory of a great sporting hero and support future rising cricketers from deprived backgrounds.
A group of Worcestershire CCC supporters are planning to show their support for a man, player and cause that is dear to their hearts and raise money for The Basil D’Oliveira Foundation by taking part in an epic 74mile sponsored walk from Worcester to Cardiff.
The group led by Mark Ashbourne and Tim Cox will leave Worcester on Thursday 1st May 2014 and aim to arrive at the SWALEC stadium in Cardiff on Sunday 4th May during the lunch interval on the first day of the Glamorgan versus Worcestershire County Championship match.
“Although Basil’s era was before my real involvement with the Club his presence is still all around New Road not just with Damian and Brett being on the staff, through the honours the Club achieved when Basil was a player then coach at the county, but also his story of never giving up on achieving his dream and the impact he had on bringing about change in South Africa and the dignified way he handled that whole situation and this walk is a great way for us to honour his memory as well as raising money for the foundation set up in his name” said Mark Ashbourne.
Anyone interested in sponsoring the walkers, taking part or able to donate items that can be auctioned following the walk should contact Mark on 07506 747619 or Tim 07785 297736.
