SIMON HUGHES OPENING GUEST SPEAKER FOR CRICKET SOCIETY

Former Middlesex pace bowler Simon Hughes, also known as ‘The Analyst’ for his role reporting on Test cricket, will this evening (Tuesday) be the Worcestershire Cricket Society’s opening guest speaker of the 2024-2025 programme.

Hughes will be addressing Society members in the Graeme Hick Pavilion (7.30pm start) with non-members also able to attend for a £5 admission fee.

He enjoyed a successful career with Middlesex, where he spent 12 seasons, and was part of the side which won the County Championship title in 1980, 1982, 1985 and 1990.

Hughes was also a member of the team which lifted the Benson and Hedges Cup in 1986, the NatWest Trophy in 1984 and 1988 and the Refuge Assurance Cup in 1990.

He ended his career with an impressive tally of 466 first class and 272 List A wickets.

After leaving Middlesex, he spent two seasons with Durham before retiring in 1993 and moving into journalism.

He worked for the Daily Telegraph, Independent and The Times and also as a reporter for the BBC,

Hughes has written several books and his autobiographical ‘A Lot Of Hard Yakka’ was chosen as the William Hill Sports Book Of The Year for 1997.

He began his role as ‘The Analyst’ for Channel 4 in 1999 and it lasted for six years before he commentated for Cricket On Five from 2006-2010.

Hughes has also been a summariser for BBC’s Test Match Special and in 2019 co-produced a documentary ‘The Greatest Game’ about England’s 2019 World Cup triumph.
