Worcestershire outclassed in three day defeat against Surrey

Published 24/06/2025

Worcestershire suffered a chastening nine-wicket defeat against Surrey, after the home side were blown away midway through Day Three, as their struggle at the wrong end of Division One continued.

Worcestershire compiled just 125 in their second innings, as they collapsed to lose six-wicket for thirteen runs.

Requiring just 49 to win at Visit Worcestershire New Road, Surrey just needed 15 overs to secure a nine wicket win.

A fifth defeat of the season leaves Alan Richardson’s side bottom of the Division One table, with five-days to turn fortunes around before they take on Hampshire, this Sunday.

After surviving the late Surrey barrage on Day Two, Worcestershire pair Adam Hose and Ben Allison started the morning in buoyant fashion, adding 66 for the fifth wicket.

Allison (27) and Hose (40) fell in consecutive overs however, as the home side lost more ground in the match.

When Matt Fisher feathered the top of Ethan Brookes’ off-stump and trapped Tom Taylor LBW eleven balls later, Worcestershire were floundering at 133-7 with a lead of just 36.

Smith continued to claim the final two Worcestershire wickets, as his ruthless performance saw him finish with exceptional figures of 11-2-38-6.

Ably supported by Matt Fisher, who took seven wickets in the match, Worcestershire struggled to cope as they lost their final six-wickets for thirteen runs on their way to being bowled out for 125.

Requiring 49 to win the match, Fateh Singh, took the consolation wicket of Dom Sibley, as the hosts succumbed to a nine-wicket defeat.

Attentions now turn to the Pears’ next fixture, as they travel to face Hampshire on Sunday, in another crucial Rothesay County Championship match.
