Rothesay County Championship Division One: Warwickshire v Worcestershire

Venue: Edgbaston

Date: Tuesday 22nd July

Scheduled start time: 11am

Worcestershire welcome the return of four-day cricket on Tuesday, as they head to Edgbaston to face rivals Warwickshire as their fight to retain their Division One status continues.

After a positive end to the Vitality T20 Blast campaign, the Pears will be looking to transfer their form into the red-ball format.

Last Time Out

A rain enforced finish at Visit Worcestershire New Road on Day Four saw Worcestershire salvage some priceless points in their bid for County Championship Division One survival.

After falling behind on Day Three, Worcestershire entered the final day knowing that they would need a batting miracle, faced with a mammoth 270 to win.

Things looked ominous midway through the day’s play when the hosts found themselves 87-6, as Warwickshire’s bowlers looked to be driving their side towards a comprehensive victory.

A stubborn fightback from Ethan Brookes (34) and Matthew Waite (44*), however gave the hosts a fighting chance, with Waite batting on until the players were brought off for rain midway through the afternoon and the match was called to a premature end.

New Signing Bertie Foreman “Buzzing” Ahead of Warwickshire Clash

After signing with the club earlier in the week, Bertie Foreman joined up with his new teammates ahead of Worcestershire’s vital Rothesay County Championship assignment with Warwickshire at Edgbaston on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old off-break bowler has had limited chances this season, plying most of his trade with parent club, Sussex, within the ranks of the 2nd XI.

With regular spinner Fateh Singh unavailable through injury, the chance for Foreman to link up with the Pears came at the perfect time for both parties.

“I mean, when I got the call last week that was going to come up, I was, I was buzzing! I am really looking forward to the next couple of weeks.

“I suppose it’s all you really want to do. You want to play first team cricket. You want to try win games cricket. You want to do as well as you can.

“I have played quite a bit second team cricket this year, gone pretty well with the ball so far. So hopefully, I can continue that into the next couple of weeks.

“I would like to have had a few more runs, got a couple of starts here and there. So maybe I’m saving them up!”

In a frantic 72-hour period, Foreman signed with the club, made his move from the South coast over the weekend and arrived at Worcestershire to begin preparations for Tuesday’s tussle at Edgbaston.

Now here and ready to go, Foreman’s focus is firmly on a crucial upcoming few days in the Worcestershire season and the youngster is hoping to harness the positive feeling amongst the group after a strong end to the T2o group-stage.

“The team comes first before anything – you want to win as many games as possible. So I think for the lads that have taken some kind of momentum out of the Blast, it’s really good and you can see it in the group all the lads that like buzzing, getting along really well.

“But personally, it’s just about trying to make sure that I’m in the right kind of headspace, my techniques in the right space to go well.”

Although the man with one first-class appearance to his name has been thrust into a new environment, the benefit of already knowing some of the squad and coaching group has made the transition a lot easier, according to Foreman.

“I was just bowling Jake Libby and Brett D’Oliveira out in the middle, they were really good, and talking to Kadeer Ali who I know relatively well.

“Yeah, there are a couple of familiar faces, like I know Ben Allison from his time down at Essex. We used to play against each other quite a lot. I know his little brother as well.

“So it’s nice to come up and have that familiarity with some people but everyone’s made me feel really welcome in the group so far.”

Division One Table position: Fifth

One to watch: Sam Hain

Despite only winning two of their nine Division One fixtures this season, Warwickshire find themselves fifth in Division One, just 23 points behind table toppers, Surrey.

The 2021 Division One winners last week secured qualification for the Vitality T20 Blast quarter-finals, at the expense of Tuesday’s visitors.

Despite losing seamer Chris Woakes, who is away on England-duty, the Edgbaston-based outfit have a side packed full of County experience to call upon, with their batting stocks impressing throughout the campaign, collecting 17 batting points across their nine games to date.

At the centre of the Warwickshire engine room, has been one of the most consistent players on the county circuit in recent times, with Sam Hain consistently reminding bowling attacks across the country just what it means to ‘value your wicket’.

During 2025, the middle-order batter has churned out 671 first-class runs, at an average of 61, with his highest score this season coming back in May, against Worcestershire at Visit Worcestershire New Road.

Despite not making his way to three-figures yet this season, his six-fifties across 15 innings in Division One underline his importance and consistency to the Warwickshire outfit.
