Home Sweet Home: Brookes Relishing Visit Worcestershire New Road Return

Published 24/04/2025

Worcestershire return to Visit Worcestershire New Road this weekend for their first home fixture of the season, and for Ethan Brookes, it’s a chance to kick-start the campaign in front of the Pears faithful with a statement performance against a strong Durham side.

Brookes, who has already shown glimpses of promise early in the season, knows exactly what to expect from a team packed with international experience and squad depth.

“Durham are always a strong side,” he said. “They’ve got a lot of depth and some high-quality players, so we know it’ll be a difficult game. But we take confidence from how we beat them in a close game last year. That result still gives the group a lot of belief, we know that when we’re at our best, we can match and beat strong teams like this.”

After three consecutive away games to open the season, the squad is relishing the chance to return home.

“It’s just nice to be back at Visit Worcestershire New Road,” Brookes continued. “We know what we’re going to get with the conditions, and it’s good to be in that home dressing room again. It just helps you settle into the game a bit quicker. There’s something special about being back in your own environment with the home crowd behind you.”

While the team has yet to secure a win this season, Brookes remains upbeat about both his own game and the collective effort.

“It’s been an okay start,” he admitted. “I wouldn’t say I’ve started well, there’s definitely more to come from me with the bat. I know I’ve got to keep working to get those big scores, but it’s pleasing to have contributed in moments. I’m just looking to build on that now.”

Rather than chasing milestones, Brookes is focused on consistency and process.

“I don’t really set targets in terms of runs or wickets. For me, it’s about reviewing each game, checking in with the little things I aim to do before each match. If I hit those markers, that’s what success looks like for me.”

Reflecting on the season so far, he’s encouraged by the cricket the team has played, despite not quite turning performances into results.

“We’ve had phases in games where we’ve had our foot in the door,” he explained. “It’s just about recognising those moments and making them count, individually and as a team, to swing the match in our favour. Personally, it’s about presence at the crease, enjoying my cricket, and backing myself. That enjoyment’s been there, even if results haven’t gone our way yet. And I believe if you’re loving your cricket, success isn’t far behind.”

As for the weekend ahead, Brookes had a clear message for supporters heading to Visit New Road.

“We always love playing in front of our members and supporters. The support we get means everything to us. And I promise the lads will give it absolutely everything out there.”
