Amy Wheeler shines on loan debut with bat and ball for Worcestershire

Published 27/04/2025

It was a debut to remember for Amy Wheeler as the on-loan all-rounder from The Blaze delivered a stunning performance with both bat and ball to help Worcestershire seal a 63-run victory over Leicestershire at Uppingham School.

Wheeler, making her first appearance for the Pears, showcased her considerable talent with a blistering innings of 70 from just 44 balls, hammering eight fours and three sixes, before backing it up with the ball by claiming three wickets to cap a match-winning display.

Speaking after the game, Wheeler was typically modest about her impact, crediting a simple mindset focused on enjoyment and sticking to her plans.

“I was just thinking I’m going to enjoy myself,” Wheeler said. “I didn’t want to take things too seriously, but I had my own plans when I went into bat and when I had the ball in hand. I definitely had my plans set and followed through with them.”

Coming to the crease with confidence and positive intent, Wheeler unleashed a fearless innings that swung the momentum firmly in Worcestershire’s favour. Her explosive knock provided the perfect platform and allowed the team to set a commanding total.

“When I go in to bat, my mindset is always to hit it on the floor. But once I see the ball, it just naturally happens, it all goes a bit out of control!

“Nearer the end of the innings, once I got into a good groove, I just wanted to keep going for it.”

Switching roles, Wheeler was just as effective with the ball. Seizing the opportunity with the new ball in hand, she stuck to a clear plan: find movement, target edges, and create chances behind the wicket.

“With the new ball, I knew there would be some good movement. My main goal was to find edges for slip catches or caught behinds.

“The ball kept swinging away and, even when it missed the stumps and the batters, I stuck to the plan. I’ll take the three wickets, no complaints there!”

Contributing heavily with both bat and ball would be a big ask for any player on debut, but Wheeler handled it with maturity and composure. Reflecting on her contribution, she was particularly pleased to have made a positive impact in both departments.

“I don’t normally help much in the batting department, so it was nice to do that today, especially with it being my first game for Worcestershire.

“With the ball, that’s my main skill and I liked being able to set the tone at the start of the game.”

Her performance inevitably prompted discussion about her potential to evolve into a key all-rounder, a suggestion Wheeler met with level-headedness.

“That’s a very good question! I think it depends on when I’m needed for batting. I’m going to stick with being a bowler for now, but after today, I guess I’m slowly moving towards that all-rounder role. It’d be nice to have that.”

Looking ahead, Wheeler is clear about her priorities: continuing to improve, and staying ready to contribute in every way she can.

“Practice. That’s all I can do outside of games, practice and improvement. That’s how I can help do things like this again in the next games.”
