Hamish Rutherford and Otago Volts will have to contest the preliminary final in the 2019-2020 Super Smash on Friday.
Worcestershire CCC’s 2020 overseas signing and his team-mates will face Auckland Aces at Dunedin.
Otago finished runners-up in the group stages after being beaten by Canterbury Kings in the final match.
Victory would have taken Rutherford and Co straight through to the final against group winners Wellington Firebirds on Sunday.
But they went down by six wickets with Rutherford experiencing a rare failure in the competition in being dismissed for five off three balls.
Otago totalled 167-5 in their 20 overs but Canterbury reached their total with seven balls to spare.
*Worcestershire Rapids 2020 signing, Ashton Turner, was part of the Australian side which overcame India by 10 wickets in the first ODI in Mumbai.
Turner, who will play in the Vitality Blast next summer, did not have the opportunity to bat as openers David Warner (128) and Aaron Finch (110) put on an unbroken 258 in just 37.4 overs.
