DAY ONE REACTION: MATTHEW WAITE

Matthew Waite says Worcestershire “will be better going forward” from the experiences of an entertaining opening day of the LV=Insurance County Championship encounter with Derbyshire at the Incora County Ground.

Waite picked up three wickets as Worcestershire fought back from a challenging opening session.

By the close, Worcestershire had collected two bonus points as Derbyshire, who were 138-2 at one stage, closed on 300-8 from 67 overs.

Waite, who finished with 3-43, said: “They played with good intent but I thought we brought it back well in the middle and then probably lost our way again a bit towards the end.

“Hopefully, we will come back tomorrow and clean the last two wickets up and then get stuck in with the bat.

Waite has now taken 15 wickets in four Championship games for Worcestershire.

He said: “As I got into things, it came out a lot better. I’ll take that on the first day of the season. I’m quite pleased with that.”

Waite is backing Worcestershire to make a strong reply with the bat tomorrow.

He said: “It’s a good score (300) but we bat all the way down to 10-11, we’ve got a long batting line-up.

“We’ve got some very good players in there, and I’d back ourselves to go past them whenever we get the chance.”
