Worcestershire CCC are sad to announce the death of first team scorer Dawn Pugh who has passed away after a long battle against cancer.
Dawn, of Ashfields Farm, Lower Broadheath, had been promoted from her second team role in 2012 after Director Of Cricket Steve Rhodes asked if she was interested in the post.
She was a hugely popular figure with the Worcestershire players, coaching staff and support team and will be sadly missed.
Last summer the County held a Yell4Fell Day in support of Dawn and first team batsman Tom Fell during the NatWest T20 Blast match with Derbyshire at New Road when they were both fighting against cancer.
Dawn had been the only full-time female scorer on the first team circuit before her illness and travelled with the squad on the team coach all over the country.
Rhodes said: “It’s very sad news. She was a wonderful lady. We spent a lot of time travelling to games and sharing some wonderful stories of cricket and the farm.
“She was a very loyal person to Worcestershire Cricket Club. She was good at her job and was part of the Worcestershire family.
“We have lost one of our ‘team’, we have good people involved at the club – and Dawn was one of them who will sadly be missing forever.”
Worcestershire CCC Chairman Stephen Taylor said: “Everyone at the club is sad to hear the news of Dawn who was a key member of the backroom team.
“She was highly regarded and respected amongst her peers but also was someone who was well liked and popular with everyone at New Road. Our condolences go out to her family.”
Dawn first started scoring for the Martley and Chantry School and Rushwick Cricket Club – at the request of her son David who played for both teams – and then Ombersley.
It was Damian D’Oliveira, who was playing for Ombersley and was then Academy Director at New Road, who asked Dawn to become temporary scorer for Worcestershire Seconds in 2002 but she stayed in the role until 2012 until her promotion to the first team.
The pinnacle of Dawn’s career came in 2013 when she scored for Australia in the Ashes Test with England at Lord’s.
Everyone at New Road passes on their condolences to Dawn’s family. She will be sadly missed but not forgotten.
