rutherford, who will be at New Road for the whole of next summer, led from the front as captain in smashing 155 off 104 balls.

he hit seven sixes and 19 fours – 118 in boundaries – as otago amassed 407-4 in their 50 overs.

it surpassed his 154, also in the ford trophy, for otago against canterbury last season.

the 30-year-old, who is available for all formats of the game with worcestershire, put on 189 in 25 overs for the first wicket with mitch renwick (47) – a record for otago.

he had also been part of the previous best opening stand of 175 with rob nicol in 2017-2018.

rutherford, who reached his 11th list a century off 85 balls, was eventually second out with the total on 225 in the 30th over.

but neil broom (52) and nick kelly (79) continued to pile on the runs as otago went past their previous ford trophy total of 371-7.

central districts were bowled out for 282 in 41.3 overs in reply with gloucestershire’s kieran noema-barnett top-scoring with 76.
