Former England opener and ICC match referee Chris Broad has agreed to become the Worcestershire Cricket Society’s replacement guest speaker for January 2025.
Chis, the father of ex England pace bowler Stuart, will on Tuesday, January 14 replace the recently retired Worcestershire all-rounder Joe Leach who is now speaking to the Society in November in place of Gareth Batty.
He began – and ended – his career with Gloucestershire and played 25 Tests between 1984 and 1989, scoring 1,661 runs at an average of 39.54 with six centuries, all of them scored outside of England.
Chris, who also had a spell with Nottinghamshire, hit 55 on his Test debut against the West Indies at Lord’s in 1984 but his most notable achievement came during the 1986-87 Ashes Series in Australia.
He scored centuries in three successive Tests – 162 at Perth, 116 in Adelaide and 112 in Melbourne during a series in which he amassed 487 runs.
Chris also featured in 34 ODIs and totalled 1361 runs at an average of 40.02 and was part of the England squad which came runners-up at the 1987 World Cup.
Somerset born Chris was then appointed a match referee for Test and ODIs in 2003, a role he held for two decades.
