ALL SYSTEMS GO FOR OPENING GAME AFTER RAIN HAS FINAL SAY AT EDGBASTON

Worcestershire will now switch their full focus to the opening LV=Insurance County Championship match of 2023 after the final day of their warm-up match with Warwickshire at Edgbaston was washed out.

It is now all systems go in the countdown to next Thursday’s encounter with Derbyshire at the Incora County Ground.

More heavy rain meant that it was inevitable there would be no play on the final day against the Bears, and play was abandoned at lunchtime.

Only the equivalent of three days play out of a possible 12 were possible for Worcestershire during their pre-season match programme – three sessions spanning two days against Northamptonshire and the opening day of the two matches against Warwickshire.

Head Coach, Alan Richardson, said: “We would naturally have liked to have spent more time in the middle, but you can’t do anything about the weather, and it’s been a similar picture virtually everywhere for counties.

“We’ve now got a week to crack on with preparations for the Derbyshire game, and the lads will be hoping for some solid net time with bat and ball.

“The good thing is many of the lads have kept in the groove by playing abroad this winter, either club cricket or various tournaments, and those who remained here had a good week under their belt at Desert Springs.

“Everyone, the players, coaches, and support staff, can’t wait for the season to get going now and let’s just hope the weather relents.”
