Worcestershire have signed vastly experienced and successful all-rounder, Josh Cobb, on a white ball contract for the 2024 Vitality Blast and Metro Bank One Day Cup, and he is targeting more trophy glory at New Road.
Cobb has shown his quality on the big stage by winning two player of the match awards in Blast finals – for Leicestershire Foxes in 2011 and Northamptonshire Steelbacks in 2016 – and will further strengthen the Rapids squad for this summer.
He is now looking to achieve similar success at New Road and Worcestershire CEO Ashley Giles believes the skills of the 33-year-old “align perfectly with our plans for the upcoming season.”
Cobb began his career with Leicestershire – his dad Russell also played for the Foxes – and his 4-22 in the 2011 Blast final against Somerset was a crucial contribution.
He moved to Northamptonshire in 2015 and the following year smashed a memorable 80 off just 48 balls to help the Steelbacks to victory over Durham in another Blast final.
Cobb has also skippered Welsh Fire in The Hundred and had several spells playing in the Bangladesh Premier League. He has made nearly 300 white ball appearances, scoring over 7,000 runs and taking over 100 wickets.
He shared his excitement about this new chapter in his career and said: “I am thrilled to be joining Worcestershire for 2024.
“The club has always been a well-drilled white ball unit, and I hope to bring my A game to New Road and assist in challenging for trophies.
“I feel the coaching set up at the club is extremely exciting, being well led by Alan Richardson and well supported by Kadeer Ali, Richard Jones, and all the backroom staff.
“I would like to thank Ashley Giles for giving me this fresh opportunity to once again do what I love – play exciting cricket and win trophies.”
Giles said: “Josh’s experience and skills align perfectly with our plans for the upcoming season.
“He’s a highly experienced white ball cricketer, who’s tasted regular success.
“He will fit into the dressing room well, and will really add to the group.”
Cobb will be reunited with new signing and another ex Northamptonshire player in Tom Taylor who has signed a four year contract with Worcestershire.
He will further strengthen the Rapids who have re-signed Pakistan leg spinner, Usama Mir, for the 2024 Blast, whilst New Zealand pace bowler, Nathan Smith is available for all three formats, including the Blast and One Day Cup.
