BOYCOTT TO CAPTAIN NEW LOOK SQUAD AS WOMEN’S RAPIDS RETURN TO ACTION

Clare Boycott is enjoying her first taste of captaining Worcestershire Women’s Rapids at senior level as they prepare with a new look squad for the West Midlands Regional Cup derby with Warwickshire at Kenilworth Wardens CC on Sunday (11am start).

Boycott has clocked up more than 200 appearances for the County in an excellent career and skippering teams at various junior levels.

But leading the side in the narrow win over Cricket Wales last month was the first time Boycott had led the full side and she hit a crucial half century at RGS Worcester.

She said: “It is a great bunch of girls, and everyone gets on really well, and it is quite easy to captain them because everyone knows their roles.

“I’ve played with most of them for years.

“I’ve done the captaincy at club level (for Astwood Bank), opened and captained, so it is quite an easy transition moving into doing it for the county team as well.

“I don’t get too fazed by having the captaincy. I enjoy it.”

Captain Chloe Hill, Ellie Anderson, Charis Pavely and Ami Campbell are all wildcard selections for The Hundred and will miss the 50 over encounter.

Also absent is spinner Phoebe Brett who picked up four wickets against Cricket Wales, and Gabby Basketter who made a half century in that game.

Batters Rosie Ward and bowler Melissa Watson are brought into the 12 strong squad and in contention to make their first team debuts.

Boycott said: “Rosie plays at the same club as myself, Astwood Bank, and it is great to see her hopefully making her debut on Sunday.

“She has done really well in club cricket and excited for her.

“She bats number three at club level, and for the Worcestershire Under-18s, as well and it is well suited for her.”

The Rapids fought back in superb style to defeat Cricket Wales and Boycott is hoping they can clock up another win against their local rivals.

She said: “We showed we got a lot of fight when we beat Wales. They were cruising to a win and then we pegged them back and bowled fantastically.

“Hopefully on Sunday against Warwickshire we can do the same because I’m sure they will come out with a strong team.”
