THREE WICKET BURST FOR JOSH TONGUE ON ENGLAND LIONS DEBUT

Worcestershire pace bowler, Josh Tongue, picked up three wickets in the space of 18 balls when making his England Lions debut against a Sri Lanka Board XI on day two in Colombo.

Tongue emulated Worcestershire team-mate Jack Haynes, who scored an unbeaten 64 on day one, in quickly making his mark for the Lions.

He bowled an opening spell of 4-0-17-0 but was soon amongst the wickets when returning to the attack to bring about a Board X1 collapse.

They reached 337-4 in reply to the Lions’ 413-8 declared but were reduced to 347-8.

It was a special day for Tongue after being selected on three previous occasions for the Lions but having to withdraw each time through injury.

He trapped Janith Liyanage (0) lbw and then cleaned bowled Dulith Wellalage (13) and Aviskha Tharindu (6).

His second spell produced figures of 4-2-5-3 to give him an overall analysis of 8-2-22-3 before the Board XI declared on 355-9 – a first innings deficit of 58.

The Lions reached 164-8 in their second innings with Haynes, who came in at number eight, unbeaten on 13 from 25 balls.

The match is a warm-up fixture for two Tests against Sri Lanka.
