Luke Wells and Chris Nash masterminded a Sussex fightback on the opening day of the Specsavers County Championship clash with Worcestershire at New Road.
The pair came together with Sussex in considerable trouble at 49-3 after skipper Ben Brown had opted to bat.
They added 97 in 32 overs with Wells again continuing his liking for the Worcestershire attack after scoring 155 at Hove earlier in the campaign.
Wells looked destined for another hundred but, after making 85 from 149 balls with 13 fours, he aimed an expansive drive at spinnner George Rhodes and Daryl Mitchell pouched the chance at slip.
Nash continued the impressive form he has been demonstrating in the NatWest T20 Blast.
The visitors had been reduced to 7-2 with debutant Angus Robson and Harry Finch both dismissed for ducks after edging skipper Joe Leach and Josh Tongue respectively through to keeper Ben Cox.
Cox’s catch to send Robson on his way back to the pavilion was particularly impressive.
It became 49-3 as Stiaan van Zyl (24) slashed at Ed Barnard’s second delivery and Rhodes at second slip clung onto another sharp chance.
After Wells’ dismissal, Brown (11) presented Cox with a third catch off Barnard.
But Nash continued to score freely and by tea had moved onto 77 out of 225-5 off 64 overs.
