RODERICK FINISHES TOP OF BATTING AVERAGES AND MAKES MARK BEHIND THE STUMPS

Gareth Roderick finished top of Worcestershire’s batting averages in the LV=Insurance County Championship for 2022 and in the top five for the most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in the competition this summer.

Roderick did not make his first Championship appearance until the away encounter with Durham in mid-June but then stayed in the red ball side for the remainder of the season.

He scored 447 runs at an average of 74.50, making several important contributions down the order before moving up to number five to hit a career-best 172 not out versus Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens.

In addition, Roderick collected 31 catches, and his six in an innings against Middlesex at New Road equalled the Worcestershire record in the competition.

Only Chris Cooke (Glamorgan), 56, Brooke Guest (Derbyshire), 52, John Simpson (Middlesex), 48, and Tom Moores (Nottinghamshire), 39, had more dismissals in Division Two than Roderick, and they all played 13 or 14 games compared to his eight.

Ed Barnard finished as Worcestershire’s leading run-scorer with 895 at an average of 59.66, and he, Club Captain Brett D’Oliveira, and Jack Haynes all scored three centuries.

Worcestershire’s total of 16 hundreds was their highest in a Championship season since 2006.

On the bowling front, Dillon Pennington enjoyed his most successful season finishing with 44 wickets at an average of 22.63.

He was the seventh-highest wicket-taker in Division Two and produced a string of consistent performances.

Joe Leach picked up 34 wickets in his eight appearances in the Championship, including a career-best 6-44 in the home meeting with Glamorgan.

Barnard bowled the most overs, 357.2, and was rewarded with 31 wickets.
