Star players from Worcestershire’s past were back at New Road as part of the club’s second Legends Day.
Phil Newport and Alamgir Sheriyar, who took a combined tally of nearly 1400 first class wickets in their career, donned their whites again to play for a Worcestershire Legends XI against a Club Invitational XI in a T20 encounter.
Newport was a key member of the successful Worcestershire side of the 1980s and early 1990s and earned three England Test caps.
Sheriyar played for Worcestershire during the latter part of the 1990s and early 2000s, and he was the leading wicket-taker in the country in 1999 with 92 first class victims.
But the stand-out performance of the day came from Charlie Durrell, with the Club Invitational XI bowler returning a hat-trick.
He dismissed Olly Cox and Jonathan Wright with the last two balls of the fifth over and then Myles Holland with the first ball of the seventh.
Cox top-scored with 25 off 16 balls, with Gohar Nisar (20), James Brinkley (19) and Phil Newport (11 not out) the main contributors to a total of 113-8 after captain David Banks opted to bat.
Durrell finished with figures of 3-1-13-3.
When the Club Invitational XI batted, Shane Setia (30) and Milan Laljani (33) both retired not out as their side reached 116-0 in 16.5 overs.
Sheriyar bowled three overs for 17 runs, and Newport his full compliment of four overs for 30 runs. Worcestershire Academy Coach, Elliot Wilson, finished with 0-27 from his four overs.
The day began with an All Stars and Dynamos softball tournament, and all proceeds from the day will go to Worcestershire’s 2022 Charity Partner, the Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust.
