Worcestershire First Eleven Scorer, Sue Drinkwater, has been chosen as one of the two scorers for the eight-team women’s cricket tournament at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games.
Sue and Heather Vernon (Warwickshire Women & Central Sparks) will officiate for the two groups of four, which get underway on July 29 and will culminate in the finals day on August 7.
All games will take place at Edgbaston, with two daily matches underway at 11am and 6pm.
Sue has been Worcestershire’s First Eleven Scorer since February 2020, although she officiated in home games for the previous two years.
She and Heather were selected for the role after the Commonwealth Games organisers went to the ECB for a selection of suitable scorers from which the duo were chosen.
They will spend the tournament housed in the Commonwealth Games Village, going into the bubble three days before the cricket tournament starts until August 8.
It is the latest prestigious honour for Sue, who in June 2014 was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the Queen’s birthday honours list for services to cricket.
She has been scoring for 45 years, learning the ropes with Cheltenham club, Prestbury, and then officiating for Chedworth CC for many years.
Sue has been training up cricket scorers for more than three decades and in 2017 officiated at the Women’s World Cup and the same year at the men’s Test at Lord’s between England and South Africa.
She said: “I am very honoured. It is a huge privilege and such an experience.
“I don’t know anything about the organisation of a tournament like this, so it’s a whole new experience for me which I’m very much looking forward to.”
Group A comprises Australia, India, Pakistan and Barbados, while Group B comprises New Zealand, South Africa, England and Sri Lanka.
The top two in each group go into the semi-finals, which are on August 6, with the plate final followed by the main final on the following day.
