WORCESTERSHIRE CONFIRM DETAILS OF SIX-A-SIDE IN HONOUR OF MARTIN WATTS

Worcestershire have confirmed details of a six-a-side tournament in honour of Martin Watts, who spent 40 years as part of the ground staff at New Road.

The eight-team event will take place on Friday, August 12, with a Worcestershire player forming part of each team.

Proceeds from the event will go to Martin, who joined the ground staff in 1979 but was forced to retire three years ago after suffering a dislocated knee cap and a broken ankle during a fall at home.

Worcester born Martin sustained the injuries whilst carrying shopping from the supermarket for his parents and was the prime carer for both of them until his father passed away.

The six-a-side was the brainchild of former Worcestershire Club Chairman John Elliot.

It will cost £750 per team to enter, and they will then bid for a Worcestershire player to be part of their side.

Each team will play at least two games of five overs per side, with everyone bowling one over apart from the wicket-keeper.

Bacon and sausage baps plus tea and coffee will be provided, and a one-course buffet lunch.

Play will get underway at 11am, and raffle prizes will also be available on the day.

Worcestershire Cricket Steering Group Chairman, Paul Pridgeon, a close friend of Martin, said: “I first knew Martin when I was a player here, and he was a dedicated worker under several Head Groundsmen.

“It has been a challenging time since his retirement in being a full-time carer for both parents until his dad passed away, and he combined that with working during his latter time at New Road.

“This six-a-side day is the club’s way of showing their appreciation of his loyal service to this Club and helping him through some challenging times.”

A donations page for Martin was also set up for anyone who would like to make a donation in appreciation of his four years of service at New Road, and he was also awarded an annual Worcestershire membership free of charge.
