Worcestershire County Cricket Club add to the Queen’s Green Canopy

In recognition of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire, Lt Col Patrick Holcroft LVO OBE CSTJ, has planted a Cherry Blossom tree as part of the Queens Green Canopy initiative at Worcestershire County Cricket Clubs New Road ground.

The Queen’s Green Canopy is a unique tree-planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 (her 70th year), which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

Joining the Lord Lieutenant at the tree planting ceremony were the High Sheriff of Worcester and Worcestershire CCC Board Member, Andrew Manning-Cox, Club President Cynthia Crawford, Chair Fanos Hira & Head of Finance and Club Secretary Sarah Gluyas.

The tree-planting formed part of a whole day of Platinum Jubilee celebrations alongside Worcestershire Rapids’ Vitality Blast T20 fixture against Leicestershire Foxes.

The Club’s specially decorated New Road ground saw spectators treated to a marching brass band, cheerleaders, face painting and a Circus Skills Workshop. Before play got underway, players of both teams lined up to sing the national anthem in front of over 3,500 spectators.

The tree will be pinned on the official Queens Green Canopy map, giving an overall picture of all trees planted nationwide under the scheme.

Head of Finance & Club Secretary Sarah Gluyas commented, “The Queen’s 70 years of dedicated public service is a beacon of hope, commitment, and pride in our country.

“As we celebrate and recognise, Her Majesty’s incredible service, it is a pleasure to leave a long-lasting legacy by planting a Cherry Blossom, the Queens favourite tree, for the Platinum Jubilee.

“The Queen’s Green Canopy project serves as a statement of hope for the future as we help create a more sustainable environment for generations to come.

“Everyone at Worcestershire County Cricket Club wishes Her Majesty all the very best on her Platinum Jubilee.”
