Worcestershire Rapids Vitality Blast captain Moeen Ali has climbed to the top of England’s Most Valuable Player rankings in T20I cricket after his fine performances throughout this winter.
Since October, the all-rounder has featured in 12 T20Is and has overhauled Jos Buttler to move into the number one berth in the PCA rankings.
Moeen top-scored for England in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi with 51 not out.
He also produced two player-of-the-match performances against the West Indies in the series, which ended yesterday evening (Sunday).
The 34-year-old captained England in the final three games in the Caribbean.
Although England were edged out 3-2 in a thrilling series, Moeen’s performances throughout the winter have lifted him into pole position in the MVP rankings.
He has totalled 113.43 points for batting, bowling and fielding, with Buttler on 104.94, Jason Roy 90.04 and Adil Rashid 81.46.
The PCA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Rankings is a unique algorithm that was initially developed in 2007 by the PCA and the players to identify the most influential players in the game.
The PCA partnered with cricket’s leading analytics specialists CricViz ahead of the 2021 season to relaunch the MVP, with key metrics including a comparison to average or expected performance in each format now taken into account.
Moeen has also moved into the top five of the ICC T20I rankings for all-rounders for the first time.
He has leapfrogged six players to achieve fifth position with 172 points.
In the deciding final match against the West Indies in Bridgetown, Moeen bowled three overs for 20 runs and scored 14 off 19 deliveries.
Four wickets in four balls in the final over from Jason Holder resulted in England being bowled out for 162 in reply to the West Indies 179-4.
