Head Coach Alex Gidman is eager to re-establish the special bond between the Worcestershire squad and members after two seasons when it has been necessary to keep at arm’s length due to COVID-19 regulations.
Gidman says the players and coaches at New Road have missed the daily link up face to face with supporters on match days and will be hosting a Coffee with the Coaches event next Thursday (3 February) where members can hear a presentation by the Coaching team about the set up here at New Road.
There will also be an opportunity to take part in the Coach’s quiz as well as being able to catch up with a number of the coaching staff about all things cricket.
Gidman is optimistic a return to something approaching normality may be possible next summer as day-to-day life reverts to previous patterns, and the Coffee with the Coaches event is the first in a series of planned events this year for members where they can engage with coaching staff and current and former players.
He said: “The last 18 months has been challenging for everyone in so many different ways, and for different reasons.
“I am fully aware of the fact that there has been a separation (between players and spectators) that no-one wanted.
“There is nothing better than seeing our members and supporters at the bottom of the pavilion steps on the morning of a day’s play and being able to have a drink with them occasionally.
“We all know that has been out of our control. It is no-one’s fault. It is a consequence of COVID-19.
“We’re really keen to re-establish that link and try and revisit some of the special values this club has stood so firmly on for many years.
“It was certainly something I remember as a player and is one of the warmest things about the club.
“I know our members and supporters are extremely supportive and very knowledgeable, and I know the players are very keen to try and re-establish those links and get back to what this Club is about.
