Former Worcestershire CCC Head Coach and England batsman, Bill Athey, is the Worcestershire Cricket Society’s guest speaker at their next winter cricket evening in the Graeme Hick Pavilion on Tuesday, November 9 (7.30pm).
Athey spent three seasons in charge at New Road from 1998 and 2000 after a playing career in which he scored 25,453 first class runs, with 55 hundreds, and 13,240 List A runs with another 12 centuries.
He made a total of 926 appearances as a professional cricketer with England, Yorkshire, Gloucestershire and Sussex
Athey was a decent enough footballer to play regularly for Brentford’s reserve side in the 1980s.
But cricket is where he carved out his name and he possessed sufficient quality to win 23 Test caps and also make 31 ODI appearances for England.
He was one of only three England players to appear in the Centenary Test at Lord’s in 1980 and the Bicentennial Test in Sydney eight years later, the others being Mike Gatting and John Emburey.
Athey was a key member of the England side which won the Ashes in Australia in 1986-87 in the opening role alongside Chris Broad. He played all five Tests and scored 96 at Perth.
