Worcestershire CCC all-rounder Ross Whiteley played a key part in Southern Brave becoming the inaugural winners of The Hundred.
Whiteley demonstrated his striking power in the 32 run win over Birmingham Phoenix – containing Worcestershire trio Moeen Ali, Dillon Pennington and Pat Brown – in the final at Lord’s.
He came to the wicket with Southern Brave 103-4 from 70 balls after being put into bat.
Whiteley struck an unbeaten 44 from 19 balls with four sixes and four fours to lift the final total to 168-5 after Paul Stirling’s 61 had laid the foundations.
Moeen, released by England to play in the final, did his best with Liam Livingstone to chase down a daunting target.
They added 56 from just 26 balls.
Livingstone made 46 off 19 balls with four sixes and Moeen cleared the ropes on three occasions in making 36 off 30 deliveries.
He was fifth out with the total 97 from 66 balls.
But some superb bowling by Tymal Mills – 1-13 from 20 balls – meant the latter batsmen could not find the boundary often enough and the Phoenix closed on 136-5.
