MATHEWS THE HERO FOR WOMEN’S RAPIDS IN LAST BALL VICTORY

Robyn Mathews was the hero for Worcestershire Women’s Rapids who overcame Staffordshire Women by eight wickets via the Duckworth-Lewis Method in a rain-hit T20 encounter at Halesowen CC.

Six runs were needed off the final two balls from Becky Cripwell and Mathews collected two boundaries to seal victory.

Staffordshire opted to bat and totalled 155-6 in their 20 overs.

Ellie Anderson and Amy Maund both claimed an early wicket to reduce Staffordshire to 21-2 and a run-out – by Mathews – brought another early breakthrough.

Poppy Davies (44) and Ilenia Sims (32) added 69 for the fourth wicket.

Maund claimed a second wicket and ended with fine figures of 4-0-23-2 with Anderson (1-32), Hannah Hardwick (1-14) and Mathews (1-9) the other wicket-takers.

Rain meant that the Rapids were left with a revised target of 51 in seven overs.

Milly Home guided them home to victory with an unbeaten 17 from 16 balls with three boundaries.

There were useful contributions from Georgina Macey and captain Chloe Hill as the game reached a thrilling climax with Mathews late boundary burst.
