COX HITS 96 AS UNDER-18S CHALK UP IMPRESSIVE SCORE IN LOCAL DERBY

Worcestershire CCC Under-18 dominated with the bat on day one of the ECB Under-18 County Competitions Group 2 derby, with Warwickshire Under-18s at Portland Road, Edgbaston.

Ismail Mohammed and Oliver Walker laid the foundations, with an opening stand of 148, and then Oliver Cox came within four runs of a deserved century.

Worcestershire declared on 308-3 from 96.3 overs, and Warwickshire replied with 13-0 from seven overs.

Captain Joe Stanley opted to bat on a used pitch, and Mohammed and Walker were not parted until the 52nd over as they batted very sensibly and solidly.

Mohammed made 77 from 167 balls with 11 fours before Shailan Srikianthan bowled him.

Cox then joined Walker, and the pair added a further 62 for the second wicket, before Walker, having made 88 off 203 balls with 15 boundaries, went lbw to Dinuk de Silva.

The tempo was increased by Cox, who hit four sixes and 12 fours in his 120 ball knock.

He raced to 96 but was then caught at mid-wicket off Rory Haydon shortly before the declaration.

Rehaan Edavalath accompanied him in a third-wicket stand of 91 and finished unbeaten on 20.

Ben Parker took the new ball for Worcestershire after being released from the first-team squad, but the home side’s openers survived until the close.
