Worcestershire Women’s Rapids chances of qualifying for their first-ever Tier 2 Finals Day were dashed by table-toppers Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens, as the side rounded off their T20 Blast campaign in underwhelming fashion.
Knowing only a win would do to keep their qualification hopes alive, the Rapids were asked to bat first having lost the toss, with Amy Griffiths spearheading her side who could only muster a total of 103.
It was Griffiths once more who had an early say, this time with the ball in hand, claiming two wickets in two deliveries to stun the home side at 11-2.
Ultimately, however, the home side demonstrated why they have only tasted one defeat in this summer’s Blast competition, as Lauren Parfitt scorched 72 from 40 balls to lead her side to an eight-wicket victory, ending Worcestershire’s 2026 20-over campaign.
With a win and other results needed to go in Worcestershire’s favour to secure a first ever Tier 2 finals day spot, no sterner test could have been posed to Ed Wilson’s side than a trip to the league leaders.
Batting first and returning to the top of the order having enjoyed a spell of World Cup cricket with the Netherlands, Sanya Khurana narrowly avoided an early departure, as bowler Gemma Porter put down a chipped chance on just the second ball.
Tight Glamorgan bowling continued to prove frustrating for the opening Rapids duo, as both Khurana and Griffiths were restricted to singles, looking to rotate the strike when possible.
Khurana found the rope on two occasions; however, early Porter spin proved fruitful for the home side, bowling Khurana first ball of the sixth over for 14, as the Rapids left the powerplay at 28-1.
Griffiths, now joined by in-form batter Madison Windeatt, struck a sumptuous drive back down the ground for four, in an attempt to get the scoreboard moving once more.
Windeatt herself went big over mid-on to find the boundary in the eighth; however, her stay at the crease ended prematurely when confusion ensued, and she was run out for eight.
This marked the start of a turbulent spell for the away side. Gwen Davies came in at four; however, could not emulate last week’s quick-fire 41, reverse sweeping to the fielder at point.
Davies’ replacement, Ebony-Jade Tweats, was then bowled the following over, as Glamorgan showed why they have enjoyed such a successful Blast campaign to date, with Worcestershire reeling at 43-4.
Digging in admirably, Griffiths remained stubborn, as her clean, powerful striking saw Ed Wilson’s side past the 50-run mark in the 11th over.
Glamorgan’s bowling attack continued to stifle the Rapids, however, who lost their fifth wicket when Lucy Harris was run out looking for a quick single at the end of the 13th.
Griffiths notched her 5th boundary in fine fashion, shifting across the wicket to open up the offside in which she duly swept through, before coming unstuck two balls later, finishing stumped for a hard-earned 36.
At 71-6, Captain Clare Boycott and Meg Bishop came together as a seventh wicket stand to bat out Worcestershire’s remaining five overs.
The pair finished unbeaten, with Bishop leading the way with 20* to help the Rapids pass the 100-run mark before ultimately closing on 103-6.
In need of a clinical bowling display to challenge the league leaders, the Rapids started with their tails up, as Jess Beach limited the home side to just four runs from their opening over.
Introduced into the attack the following over, Griffiths then dramatically swung momentum back in her side’s favour.
Enticing Daisy Jeans to play and miss out of her crease, sharp work from Davies behind the stumps saw Glamorgan’s opener given her marching orders for eight.
Griffiths then struck once more on the very next delivery, utilising her right arm round the wicket to great effect, pinning Megan Sturge for nought as Glamorgan were left at a vulnerable 11-2.
Seemingly undeterred, however, the hosts pressed on, as the dangerous Lauren Parfitt began to flex her muscles, pushing her side to a commanding 44-2 at the end of the powerplay.
Despite continued endeavour from the Rapids bowlers, Parfitt was in the mood, and raced to her half century with a deft single down to third man right on the halfway mark of the home side’s innings.
With their hosts at 78-2, the Rapids could sense their finals day qualification hopes drifting away, as Parfitt continued to display her brilliance, with the Glamorgan Captain lacing three vicious back-to-back boundaries in the 11th.
Worcestershire’s elimination from the competition was then confirmed in the 13th over, as Glamorgan emerged victorious by eight wickets, with Parfitt finishing unbeaten on 72.
Ed Wilson’s Rapids now face a two-week break before continuing their Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign away at Derbyshire, hoping to transfer their progress shown in this summer’s Blast to the 50-over format.
