ALEX GIDMAN SAYS PLAYERS FEED OFF THE ENERGY OF RETURNING CROWD AT NEW ROAD

Head Coach Alex Gidman said the Worcestershire players fed off the energy generated by the members who were back watching cricket at New Road during the innings victory over Derbyshire in the LV=Insurance County Championship match.

More than 800 members per day were allowed back under government guidelines and were rewarded with a superb performance by the entire team.

Gidman said: “The crowd have been fantastic, it’s been lovely to have some noise back and some energy and the guys spoke about it as the game went on.

“They started to feed off the crowd and the members. It was a really enjoyable four days.

“It is such a great club for members and crowds, very knowledgeable and very supportive of the players.

“They know how hard the lads have been working, and when they put in the effort like they have these four days, I think the members would be proud of the players.

“They performed really well, and it’s been great to have the members back in.

“It’s felt like a whole club effort to get this result, and looking forward to seeing some familiar faces again next week already.”

Gidman praised the wicket provided by the groundstaff after the challenges of the winter.

He said: “It was a really good cricket wicket. It did a little bit first thing on the first day, and it was challenging to bat.

“But we felt if we could get through that, then it might get slightly harder as the game went on, which we think was pretty accurate.

“We probably got an above par score in that first innings, so credit to the batsmen for getting those runs on the board.

“The wicket played exactly as we thought. It was a great cricket wicket and good on the groundstaff for overcoming the challenges they’ve had in these last two or three months.

“The ground looks beautiful again, and we are looking forward to the rest of the summer.”
