BENNETT AND DICKENSON HEROICS WITH BAT IN VAIN IN ECB GROUP TWO OPENER

Late order hitting by Callum Bennett and Josh Dickenson proved in vain for Worcestershire Under-18s. They went down by 21 runs under the Duckworth Lewis Method in an ECB County Competitions Group Two fixture with Derbyshire at Kidderminster.

Worcestershire, whose line-up included several Academy players, were set a revised 218 target in 48 overs and were in trouble at 112-6.

But Bennett and Dickenson joined forces and added 64 for the seventh wicket.

Bennett struck 42 off 38 balls with one six and three fours before he was run out at 176-7.

Dickenson made 43 from 36 deliveries with three boundaries before his dismissal, and the Under-18s eventually closed on 196-8.

Oliver Walker (27) and Oliver Cox (26) had earlier added 52 for the second wicket after the early dismissal of Ismail Mohammed (2).

Harry Cooke (20) and Joe Stanley (17) also made valuable runs before Bennett and Dickenson came together.

Earlier, Derbyshire had totalled 226-9 in 50 overs after being put in to bat.

Cooke ended an opening stand of 53 by trapping Mitchell Wagstaff lbw, and he finished with figures of 9-0-32-2.

Derbyshire were well placed at 93-1, but Oliver Davidson bowled an excellent spell that brought him figures of 10-1-26-1. Stanley (3-50 off ten overs) and Josh Dickenson, with two wickets in two balls, made positive contributions.
