Roderick reflects on crucial opening day rescue act at Northants

Published 01/05/2026

Gareth Roderick produced a sublime 164 to save Worcestershire from an ominous position on day one of the Division Two clash with Northamptonshire, joining forces with Oliver Hannon-Dalby as the pair added a critical 120 runs for the 10th wicket to see the Pears up to 306.

Having won the toss and electing to bat first, skipper Brett D’Oliveira may have been rueing his decision when his side slumped to 137-7 early in the afternoon session, and a score of 200 looked even more unlikely when Northants reduced the visitors to 186-9.

Led by a sumptuous Roderick ton, Hannon-Dalby produced a gritty 26 in a two-hour stay at the crease that saw the pair secure the away side a miraculous second batting point from the most unlikely of positions.

Headline maker Roderick, who was left stranded eight runs short of a career best first-class score, was relieved to have turned his good form into a big score.

“It was nice to contribute today, as in the first three games I maybe haven’t done that as I would have liked to have done, so nice to get in, get a score and help the boys out by getting over 300 and secure the second batting point.

“It was nice to spend some time out there as we have had a lot of guys make a few but not kick on, so for me it was good to kick on and get a big one.”

“I have always preferred being up there, so when I got the nod this morning, I was more than happy.

“OHD stepped up and did an unbelievable job, showed a real calm head, so we could work through the situation and went about it in the best way that the situation required. He was like a brick wall out there.”

“We tried to rotate strike when we could, but once he got in, he was away.”

Having made several starts in the opening forays of 2026, Worcestershire’s seasoned keeper-batter saved his best knock for when his team needed him most, reeling off 19 boundaries in his magnificent 212-ball stay at the crease.

After contributing heavily to what was a record 10th wicket stand for the Club against Northamptonshire, Roderick took to the field with his teammates as the Pears looked to make some early inroads in the home side’s top-order.

Although applying pressure from the outset, the visitors failed to breach the defences of Ricardo Vasconcelos and Luke Procter, as the hosts closed 40-0.

Roderick says his side will have to maximise the opening hour on day two, given a surface that continues to flatten out.

“We did talk about the swing in momentum late on today with our partnership, and I thought we bowled quite well without any reward with a lot of edges down to third man.

“I don’t think we can judge the pitch until both sides have batted on it, but we know how crucial that first hour is going to be tomorrow.

“There was a bit on the pitch this morning, but then as the day went on it got a bit more placid, so tomorrow morning will be key to get through their top order while the ball is still hard and build up some pressure.”
