HEAD COACH PLEASED WITH EARLY PRE-SEASON PERFORMANCES AHEAD OF TAUNTON RETURN

Head Coach Alex Gidman is pleased with the Worcestershire CCC squad’s general performances during the early phase of their 2021 pre-season programme.

Worcestershire followed up an impressive two days against Somerset at Taunton with victory against Durham UCCE at Kidderminster on the final afternoon of a three-day game.

On the batting front, Riki Wessels and Brett D’Oliveira have scored centuries, and there have been fifties from Gareth Roderick, Ross Whiteley and Daryl Mitchell.

Club Captain Joe Leach and Dillon Pennington have taken wickets with the new ball, and all the bowlers have managed to get overs under their belts.

Attention will again switch to Somerset tomorrow (Monday) for a three-day fixture at Taunton before a two-day contest with Kent at Canterbury beginning on 2 April.

Alex Gidman said: “It’s been encouraging that we seem to have slotted into the playing rhythm quite quickly after the winter, but then the lads did put in a lot of work and also had good practice time at Kidderminster.

“Bowlers and batsmen have had good time in the middle, and all the players in the squad have had an opportunity against Somerset and-or Durham.

“Riki (Wessels) scored an excellent hundred at Taunton, and Brett (D’Oliveira) batted well against Durham on the second day to get to his century while several other batsmen have had good time at the crease over both games.

“I know we are at an early stage, but things are looking good, and I’m pleased with where the group are.

“We probably had the better of the two days at Taunton and handled a different sort of challenge against Durham with the wicket on the first day in particular doing a lot more than we envisaged.

“We’ve also generally been blessed with good weather apart from the last morning against Durham, and now we will look to build on the progress made so far in the final two games before the opening Championship match.”

Worcestershire have named a 13 man squad for the trip to Taunton.
