Gareth Williams has been handed the responsibility of coaching and managing Worcestershire CCC’s girls county age group programme.
Williams has been given the role by Worcestershire CCC Academy Coach, Elliot Wilson, and has been putting the Under-11, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 groups through their paces at Prince Henry’s School, Evesham since January.
The 46-year-old already has experience of working with the County’s boys pathway for several years.
He has played Birmingham Premier League cricket for more than 20 years with Harborne, Barnt Green, Walsall, Kidderminster and Bromsgrove.
In 2003 he played for the Worcestershire Cricket Board against Worcestershire CCC in the C and G Trophy and dismissed Graeme Hick, achieving figures of 10-1-30-1 from the New Road End in one spell with the new ball.
Wilson said: “As we know, moving forward since last August, the County Cricket Club has taken responsibility for women’s and girls pathway cricket and the senior (Rapids) side.
“The emerging players programme-talented players programme started in earnest in November with a group of 11 girls training together every Wednesday at Prince Charles School, Kidderminster.
“In January, our girls county age group programme which is four squads of Under11s, Under-13s, Under-15 and Under-17s got underway.
“They train every Sunday at Prince Henry’s School, Evesham and that has started really positively and already the feedback from the parents I have seen has been refreshing and exciting about what we’ve done even at this early stage.
“It was very important for me to have a focal point from a coaching perspective and leading perspective on Sundays for the girls.
“Gareth Williams has kindly accepted the opportunity to oversee county age group cricket on Sundays for the girls.
“He has been a Birmingham League cricketer for over 20 years, a very successful one. He is someone who had previously been working in the boys pathway and is someone I knew that for a period of time.
“While the women’s game is transitioning and transforming, he is a good person to help and support the club to deliver a really good programme on a Sunday.
“He is a qualified coach. He is managing and coaching the county age group programme.”
