Ben Cox says Worcestershire have earned the right to be regarded as “one of the best white ball teams in the country” – and he is looking to add to his growing medal collection.
The County’s wicket-keeper batsman proudly has a Division Two County Championship winners medal (2017) and Vitality Blast winners medal (2018) along with his team-mates.
Worcestershire also came close to adding to that tally when losing the Royal London One-Day Cup semi-final with Kent in 2018 in the final over and only surrendering their Blast title off the last ball of the final to Essex (2019).
Cox, currently playing grade cricket for Southern Districts in Australia, said: “It’s such a good time for Worcestershire in white ball cricket.
“When anyone interviews me, I say that we’ve earned the right to be regarded as one of the best white ball sides in the country – and we are.
“We’ve done it consistently now for three or four years.
“We’ve topped the groups, made quarter-finals, semi-finals, finals. Yes sometimes we haven’t got through but we are gradually getting there.
“We’ve won the Blast and made finals day again. It’s only going to be good for us moving forward as a club.”
Cox celebrated 10 years since making his Worcestershire debut last summer but said: “I’ve always been more interested in how many medals I finish my career with, not how many years I’ve played. One hundred per cent.
“We’ve got a winners medal as Division Two champions and now a winners medal for the Blast.
“The medal collection is slowly growing and it’s a good sign that we’re appearing more frequently in finals or semi-finals in 50 over and T20 cricket.”
Cox admits he was convinced the Rapids were going to retain their Blast title.
He said: “It was heart-breaking the way it happened and it always hurts that little bit more when you finish so close.
“I honestly thought the whole time we fielded, the only time I thought they were going to win was the last two balls.
“The whole time I thought we had it in the bag. Hopefully we will be better for that experience next time around.”
