Worcestershire paceman Adam Finch made his England Under-19 ‘Test’ debut and picked up a wicket on the opening day of the first match of the series against South Africa Under-19s at Scarborough.
It was a proud moment when the the Academy product received his cap before the start of play from England Under-19 head coach, Jon Lewis.
His County colleague and fellow Test debutant, batsman Jack Haynes, was handed also his cap – by the Under-19s batting coach Mal Loye.
Finch, one of five survivors from the winter ICC World Cup squad in New Zealand, shared the new ball and bowled a fine opening spell of 7-2-11-1.
He deserved more than his one breakthrough which came in his sixth over when he bowled Proteas opener Thomsanqa Khumalo.
After his initial burst of overs, Finch returned to the attack to bowl a second spell of 6-2-21-0.
South Africa were eventually bowled out for 232 with Middlesex leg spinner Luke Hollman returning fine figures of 25-3-39-4.
Finch, who made three appearances in the World Cup after making his Under-19s debut in last summer’s series with India, ended with overall figures of 15-4-41-1.
Jacob Miltz (61) and Jean de Klerk (53) were South African’s main contributors.
Haynes picked up one catch at the tail-end of the South African innings and will hope to make a sizeable contribution with the bat tomorrow.
