Worcestershire CCC will take cricket outside of the county boundaries tomorrow to an area which has flourished in producing cricketers for the club when the Seconds take on Bangladesh Academy at Wolverhampton CC.
The likes of Vikram Solanki, Aneesh Kapil, Tom Fell, George Scrimshaw and Zen Malik are the most recent Worcestershire players to emerge from the region in recent times as part of the partnership with the County via the satellite academy.
Now Worcestershire are seizing the opportunity to contest the 50 over match at Fell’s home club to help broaden the appeal of the game and attract new followers to the County – and say a thank you for the support given.
County Academy Coach Elliot Wilson said: “It is a game that wasn’t in the original schedule for the Seconds but an opportunity came up during the season and myself and Kevin (Sharp) were very keen for the game to happen.
“It is an opportunity to play a county game outside of the county and Wolverhampton has had very good links with Worcestershire over the years.
“I think it’s only healthy that we take county cricket and Worcestershire cricket across the region to broaden its appeal, to attract more people to the club.
“It is a real opportuity for us to take what we do and how we do things into Staffordshire and promote the good work we’ve been doing outside the four walls of Worcestershire.”
Wilson added: “We run a couple of satellites and one of them is run around the North Worcestershire-South Staffordshire border and the Black County.
“We’ve had that group up and running for a number of years and it has produced the likes of Tom Fell, George Scrimshaw, Zen Malik to name just a few and one of our cricket scholars at Malvern College – Rehaan Edavaleth.
“It’s being a real good area for us in terms of talent identification and recruiting good players into our programme. We try and give a bit back and this is an ideal opportunity.”
