RODERICK SKIPPERS GREEN POINT TO ONE WICKET SUCCESS

Gareth Roderick captained Green Point CC to a thrilling one wicket win over Western Province CC in a Western Province Premier League fixture.

The Worcestershire keeper-batter picked up two early catches behind the stumps as Western Province were reduced to 22-4 after choosing to bat before recovering to reach 211-9 in 50 overs.

It followed on from his 40 dismissals for Worcestershire in the LV=Insurance County Championship last summer, a figure only surpassed by Durham’s Ollie Robinson (47) and Sussex’s Oli Carter (45).

Roderick, who also finished as Worcestershire’s second highest run-scorer in the Championship, went in at number four for Green Point and made a breezy 18 off 20 deliveries with three boundaries.

His side were in trouble at 47-3, 131-7 and then 189-9 but last man Simphiwe Yiba hit a quickfire 24 not out to help Green Point to the narrowest of victories.

Josh Baker picked up a wicket with the final ball of the day for Northern District CC on the opening day of the two-day New South Wales Premier Cricket grade two fixture with Sydney CC.

The spinner came on first change and dismissed opener Henry Kirk (6) as Sydney closed on 13-1 from 11.1 overs.

Baker will resume next Saturday with figures of 3.1-2-1-1. He had early been dismissed for a single batting at number eight as Northern District were bowled out for 249 in 80 overs.
