HEAD COACH SAYS PLAYERS CAN REAP BENEFITS OF PLAYING LEAGUE CRICKET

Head Coach Alan Richardson will encourage Worcestershire’s players to play as much league cricket as possible this summer when county commitments allow.

Richardson says such experiences are of “huge benefit” to players in terms of their development and throwing up challenges they have to try and combat.

Several Worcestershire professionals and Academy players have played Birmingham and District League Premier League cricket in recent seasons if an opportunity arises.

The same policy will continue in 2023 with a host of Worcestershire players registered with BPL clubs.

Richardson said: “Will players be encouraged to play league cricket when county commitments allow? We will try to. I’m a huge fan. I benefitted massively from going overseas and also playing club cricket here.

“If the boys are comfortable doing that and we will obviously have to keep an eye on how they are going both mentally and physically, in terms of their wellbeing.

“But I think whenever an opportunity arises, we are always quite keen, and I’ve got Kadeer (Ali) with me, who loves it as well. It is of huge benefit to the guys.

“It doesn’t necessarily replicate first class cricket by any stretch, but what it does do is make them have to solve problems consistently.

“They have to adapt to whatever conditions and scenarios they are put in, and that’s huge for their learning.

“Not only that, they get to play cricket with guys, and they are living these people’s dreams, and hopefully, it makes them appreciative of the situation they are in against some really good people who love playing cricket.

“It just has so many benefits to it.”
