ACADEMY TOP ECB COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP GROUP AFTER WIN OVER LOCAL RIVALS

Worcestershire CCC Academy have finished as ECB Under-18 County Championship Group Two champions after defeating Warwickshire by 230 runs in their final match at Barnt Green.

The Academy won three and drew two of their five matches and finished on 97 points, 10 more than runners-up Northamptonshire.

They were put into bat by their local rivals and Ismail Mohammed (40) and Ajay Shingadia (41) put on 82 for the first wicket.

Worcestershire then lost five wickets for 36 runs but Imaad Mahmood struck an excellent 87 off 160 balls with one six and 11 fours.

He was given good support by Angus Catto (37) in a century stand for the sixth wicket as Worcestershire totalled 255 all out from 89 overs.

Warwickshire were then bowled out for 149 with Harry Darley (13-5-30-2) and Myles Holland (8-3-17-2) inflicting the early damage before being well backed up by Gohar Nisar (7-1-9-3) and Joshua Leach (5-1-26-2).

Worcestershire then built on a first innings lead of 106 thanks largely to Ismail Mohammed’s superb 138 off 190 balls with three sixes and 19 fours.

He featured in a series of substantial partnerships, 59 with Shingadia (29), 104 with keeper-batter Luke Powell (45) and 67 with Mahmood.

After Mohammed’s dismissal, Mahmood (65) went onto complete his second half century of the game.

He added a further 72 with Holland (32 not out) before the declaration at 340-6 set Warwickshire 447 to win.

Darley again made two early breakthroughs and returned to pick up two more wickets as he finished with figures of 13-3-40-4.

Mahmood (13-2-50-2) and Leach (9-1-48-2) gave him good support as Warwickshire were bowled out for 216 in 62 overs.
