Daryl Mitchell top-scored with 62 but Worcestershire CCC surrendered their unbeaten record as they were beaten by 258 runs on the final day of the LV=Insurance County Championship match with Durham at the Emirates Riverside.
Opener Mitchell produced a chanceless knock and he and Jake Libby (36) put on 79 for the first wicket as Worcestershire set out to bat through a rain-shortened final day to earn a draw.
But there was a procession of wickets in the face of some outstanding bowling once the openers were parted and Durham’s victory was sealed with 32.5 overs to spare with Worcestershire 164 all out.
Chris Rushworth became Durham’s record wicket-taker in first class cricket and added four more scalps today to end with 9-108 in the game while Mark Wood produced plenty of pace on a slowish surface.
Worcestershire lost 10 wickets today for 104 runs in 46.1 overs and will have to be content with four bonus points from the game.
They will be hoping to bounce back quickly from this first setback in six games when they take on Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge starting on Thursday.
Play got underway at 12.45pm after an early lunch following rain during the morning with 79 overs remaining.
Mitchell completed his third half century of the season when he drove Rushworth down the ground for three.
It was one of his quickest as it came off only 54 balls and contained six fours.
Libby had a second escape of his innings on 16 when Jack Burnham at mid-wicket failed to hold onto a difficult chance off Rushworth.
Two boundaries to third man off successive balls from Chris Wood moved Mitchell onto 62 but then the stand was broken without addition to his tally.
Mitchell needed lengthy treatment after being hit on the right hand by the hostile Wood and, from the next delivery which was angled into his ribs, was caught at short leg by Burnham.
Tom Fell (1) was adjudged lbw to a delivery from Bryden Carse which came back a long way and kept low.
Libby had another life on 23 when dropped at first slip by David Bedingham off Ben Raine.
New batsman Jack Haynes smashed Carse past point for four and Libby punched Rushworth in front of square to the boundary on his return to the attack.
Rushworth became Durham’s record wicket-taker in first class cricket when Haynes on 24 angled his bat and nicked to Bedingham who this time made no mistake.
It meant he went past the 527 tally of Graham Onions.
There was a flurry of wickets with Brett D’Oliveira (7) the first of three in two overs when strangled down the leg side and caught by keeper Stuart Poynter.
Riki Wessels (0) played down the wrong line and was lbw to Rushworth and Libby, having made a determined 36 off 117 balls, also went leg before to a Wood delivery which cut back at 135-6.
Ed Barnard (1) showed a straight bat to a ball from Carse but edged through to Poynter as Worcestershire reached 146-7 off 49 overs by tea.
Rushworth was applauded off the pitch at the interval by the Worcestershire players on the balcony for surpassing Onions record.
Worcestershire Club Captain Joe Leach (5) became another lbw victim to the fourth delivery of the final session from Rushworth and Ben Cox (11) departed in the same fashion to the 34-year-old.
The game ended when Charlie Morris (0) was caught behind off Scott Borthwick to leave Josh Tongue, who picked up seven wickets in the game, unbeaten on 12.
