Worcs Keeper Cox Says Mcc Call-Up Is “a Great Opportunity To Learn”

Ben Cox says his call up by the MCC to face Champion County Middlesex in Abu Dhabi next month is "a great opportunity to learn."

The Worcestershire wicket-keeper batsman is part of the MCC squad – along with County team-mate Joe Clarke – for the four-team T20 tournament on March 24 and the four-day clash with Middlesex from March 26-29.

It is a reward for the consistent and excellent form Cox has shown behind the stumps and with the bat during the past two seasons at New Road.

But he intends to use his selection to watch the likes of Test players such as Haseeb Hameed and Ben Duckett and gleam bits of information that may benefit his own game.

The 24-year-old, who signed a new four year contract in July, said: "I'm delighted to be chosen in the squad that is going.

"I've got 10 days with Worcestershire and 10 days with the MCC in Abu Dhabi so it’s going to be a good trip.

“For me, it's a great achievement, a great opportunity to show what I can do, but also a great time to learn when I go over there.

"I will be amongst Test players like Haseeb Hameed and Ben Duckett so it's a great opportunity to watch and see how they go about their business.

"You can learn just the tiniest detail off someone like Haseeb who has played Test cricket already and you can just tell he is going to have a successful England career.

"You have to just speak to people, learn, be a bit of a badger, and enjoy yourself along the way."

Cox, who made his first team debut seven and a half years ago, is renowned for his strong work ethic and it has paid dividends.

He said: “The hard work I’ve put in has paid off and Malvern College is where the hard work is done during the winter.

"Hopefully the hard work pays off 1) in Abu Dhabi and then 2) hopefully the season should take care of itself.

"I got the phone call (from the MCC) and I was chuffed to bits but it's still a long way off yet and I want to continuing focusing on working hard and developing as a player in the meantime."
