WORCESTERSHIRE UNDER-17S SWITCH TO THREE-DAY CHAMPIONSHIP ACTION

Worcestershire Under-17s will launch their ECB County Championship three-day competition campaign on Monday when they take on Gloucestershire at Bishopston CC in Bristol (11am start).

The County will take part in four three-dayers during the next month with matches against Devon, Hampshire and Somerset to follow.

It will give players the opportunity to play and become accustomed to the longer format of the game and the skills required.

The competition is also ideal exposure for players with the potential to play Second Eleven cricket further down the line.

Worcestershire Academy Coach Elliot Wilson said: “Some of them will be playing their second or third year of three-day cricket with the Under-17s.

“But, for a lot of them, it will be the first time they are playing it and it’s a real different challenge for them.

“The idea of batting for long periods of time is not intrinsically linked with the youngster playing the game now.

“It’s a lot more to do with the exciting stuff which they see a lot of, the coloured clothing, white ball cricket, balls going to all parts.

“The skills of batting for long periods of time are ones we need to preserve and be very clever how we develop it because it’s not an easy one to get right.

“Also bowling three or four spells a day – and all of those spells being of an equal standard is quite challenging.”
