Whiteley Drafted Into County Squad For Opening Home Match With Notts

worcestershire head coach kevin sharp has made one change to the squad announced for tomorrow’s specsavers county championship division one encounter with nottinghamshire at New Road.

steve magoffin is being rested as a precaution after suffering a tight hamstring against somerset at the cooper associates county ground, taunton at the weekend.

the former sussex paceman will have to wait to make his second home ‘debut’, having previously played for the county during the 2008 season.

magoffin is replaced in the 13 by all-rounder ross whiteley who scored a century for the seconds at taunton vale last week.

whiteley has spent part of the winter playing in limited overs competitions around the globe – the bangladesh premier league, the inaugural t10 tournament in sharjah and the pakistan super league.

but he stressed recently in a recent interview with the worcestershire ccc website that playing red ball cricket and being part of worcestershire’s four-day side is also a major goal.

whiteley showed his quality the last time the county were in division one in this format with a superb century against the then champions yorkshire at scarborough.

worcestershire pipped nottinghamshire, who will include england paceman stuart broad in their team, for the division two title last season.
