Talent Pathway Selection Criteria, Policy and Appeals

WCCC Talent Pathway Selection Criteria, Policy & Appeals

Our Criteria

The standards or principles used to evaluate and choose between different players.

  1. Playing to your strengths when batting with the aim of scoring runs
  2. Aiming to deliver your best ball as often as possible with the aim of taking wickets
  3. Aim to be a wicket taking fielder
  4. Catch, stop, and throw a hard ball with confidence

These criteria help ensure that our selection process is objective, consistent, and aligned with the desired outcomes.

Exploring (1) – Acquiring (2) – Developing (3) – Performing (4)

We use the metric above so that selection criteria are clearly

Our Policy

“A structured set of guidelines or rules that outlines how choices should be made within an organization or process. It ensures that the selection process is transparent, fair, consistent, and aligned with organizational goals and standards. Below are key components typically found in a selection policy”’

Our Policy:

  1. To help identify and include appropriate players in the Worcestershire Talent Pathway.

Our Criteria:

  1. Playing to your strengths when batting with the aim of scoring runs.
  2. Aiming to deliver your best ball as often as possible with the aim of taking wickets.
  3. Aim to be a wicket taking fielder.
  4. Catch, stop, and throw a hard ball with confidence.

Our Process:

  1. All existing players invited back to attend trials if they wish to continue in the programme. (No preselection/all players to attend trials).
  2. Open nomination process. This is communicated via email directly to local clubs and schools and via social media platforms (Looking to remove the influence and impact of potential biases from nominators)
  3. All nominated players divided up into working groups (approx. 20) for attendance at observation sessions.
  4. Working groups are then listed in date of birth order so we know Red 1 is the oldest in the room and Black 10 is the youngest in the room.
  5. Players to attend several sessions for a robust decision to be made. If this is one session or four, we look to facilitate.
  6. Phase lead and lead age group coach to make selection recommendations using the information gathered by the minimum 6 coaches in the hall. This is then checked and challenged by HoTP and phase lead factoring in education, diversity, age and training age.

Our Evaluation:

  1. Players to attend observations where they participate in a skills circuit where they are viewed by six separate coaches. The coaches score everyone on a 1 – 4 scale.
  2. Players to participate in a net session, where skills are scored on a 1 – 4 scale.
  3. 1 – 4 is a peer assessed scale.

Our Equality:

  1. All phase leads work solely for WCCC and do not have any involvement with players privately or with clubs or schools in the county.
  2. All lead coaches declare potential conflicts of interest.
  3. HoTP to check and challenge selections factoring in education, diversity, age and training age.
  4. HoTP works solely for WCCC with no club or private conflicting interests.

Our Records:

  1. Using the data created from the coach observations we create spreadsheets with subsequent values attached to inform decision making. For example, across the skills circuit each player can score up to 24 and we would look to see the average score that would capture in the number of players we believe should be involved based on gross playing population at that age.

Our Communication:

  1. All players receive written communication with in seven days of WCCC completing its final trial.
  2. All non-selected players are provided feedback linked to our four cricket principles and aligned to what stage they are at within learning each principle (Exploring – Acquiring – Developing – Performing).

Our Review:

  1. The process we follow, and the details of players selected and unselected is shared with the clubs DoC.
  2. We would review our selections and challenge decision making based on group size and the school and diversity data.

Appeal of none selection:

  1. A none selected player can appeal decision made by the selection panel
  2. Appeal panel reviews information received by player family, information held by WCCC from trials and selection process around specific player
  3. Appeal panel communicates to player one of the following
    • If the process has been followed decision stands
    • If the process was followed but panel believes a re-observation is required, the player will be invited to a re-observation
    • If the process was not followed the player will be invited for a re-observation
  4. Upon re-observation a final decision will be made by the selection panel and communicated to the player and family.
