new worcestershire ccc signing steve magoffin has faith in the medical and support staff to produce the kind of winter programme which will help to ensure he is fit and firing on all cylinders in april.
magoffin is optimistic that this summer’s injury concerns in his final season with sussex – he was side-lined with knee and achilles problems – are behind him.
it was a rare spell on the side-lines for magoffin in a wicket-laced career in county championship cricket.
now he will put in the “hard yards” to implement whatever plans are put together by head of science and medicine ben davies and strengthening and conditioning coach ross dewar.
he said: “do i feel last summer’s injuries are behind me? yes i do. i’d had a pretty good run really with the volume of bowling i’d been doing in four-day cricket.
“the medical staff here, they’ve given me a good look over and have consulted with the medical staff at sussex as well.
“they’ve had a good chat. yes, i’ll do things differently to some of the younger guys but some of these blokes are half of my age!
“we will put together a really good programme to suit me, and what i need between now and april.
“i’m really confident with the boys here that they will get that right and, whatever they give me, i’ll put in the hard yards, and get myself out there.
“now i’m just looking forward to getting a good pre-season under my belt and starting the season well here.”
magoffin is set to predominantly play championship cricket after returning to New Road for a second spell.
he said: “that’s the main reason i am here. i haven’t really played much white ball cricket for sussex over the years either but i’ve always been ready to play if needed.
“the focus here is to play as much championship cricket as possible and, with the other bowling stocks that are at the club, it would only probably be if anything unfortunate happened to a few of the guys that i would need to play white ball cricket.
“it’s about getting as many championship matches in as i can and having the most impact in that really so we can not just stay in division one.”
