Overseas signing Nathan Smith is heading to Worcestershire as a trophy winner after helping Wellington lift the Plunket Shield and he also finished as the competition’s leading wicket-taker.
The New Zealander will arrive in England in time for the opening Vitality County Championship match with Warwickshire at Edgbaston on April 5 on the crest of a wave.
The wash-out of the final day of the match with nearest rivals Northern Districts meant Wellington finished on 94 points and unbeaten in their eight four-day games.
They finished three points ahead of runners-up Northern Districts with Smith taking three more wickets on day three to end with 33 from 12 innings at an average of 17.18.
The 25-year-old collected two more scalps than Otago’s Jacob Duffy (31) with Scott Kuggeleijn on 30.
Smith has been a model of consistency throughout the tournament and was voted New Zealand’s domestic player of the year.
His wicket tally included a career best 6-36 against Canterbury.
Smith is available to play all formats for Worcestershire throughout the summer.
