Skipper Rhodes Leads From The Front With Century In Trophy Win

Skipper Rhodes Leads From The Front With Century In Trophy Win

Centurion George Rhodes hit his highest Second Eleven Trophy score as Worcestershire Seconds overcame their Nottinghamshire counterparts by 15 runs at Oakham School.

Skipper Rhodes led from the front in making a superb 134 not out to rescue Worcestershire from a poor start and total 244-9 in their 50 overs.

It surpassed his previous best score in the competition – also against Notts – when making 101 at Trent College two years ago.

Rhodes struck one six and 13 fours in his 139 ball knock and received excellent support from Alex Hepburn during a fourth wicket stand of 138 in 27 overs.

Then Josh Tongue and Pat Brown both picked up two wickets and, aided also by three run outs, the home side were restricted to 229-9.

Victory maintained coach Kevin Sharp's side's 100 per cent start in the Trophy after the win over Warwickshire at Moseley last week.

Worcestershire were put into bat and quickly lost Ollie Westbury caught behind (1), Daryl Mitchell pulling to mid wicket (12) and Alexei Kervezee leg before (9) with only 34 on the board.

Westbury completed an unwanted hat-trick as he had also been dismissed for one playing for Shrewsbury on Saturday and a single when representing Shropshire yesterday.

Rhodes and Hepburn set about repairing the damage and, when the latter was out for 56 off 79 balls with four fours, the total had advanced to 172.

Rhodes increased the tempo in the latter stages and Tongue made 11 not out off 12 balls before getting to work with the ball.

He removed openers Greg Smith (4) and Tom Moores (26) and then three wickets fell with the total on 66 including two in three balls to Brown.

Notts were in deep trouble at 74-6 but their hopes were revived by a stand of 101 in 19 overs between Anuj Dal and Matthew Carter.

Mitchell broke the stand when dismissing the latter for 57 and victory was all but secured for Worcestershire when Dal was run out for 83 at 210-8 in the 48th over.

Tongue ended with 2-24 from nine overs and Brown 2-28 from six overs.

The Seconds are next in Trophy action against Derbyshire at Kidderminster on Thursday (11am start).
