Seconds Suffer First Defeat In Trophy Against Strong Derbys Line-Up

Worcestershire suffered their first defeat of the season in the Second Eleven Trophy when a powerful Derbyshire side defeated them by 81 runs at Flagge Meadow.

The visitors, who are currently entertaining Australia at the 3aaa County Ground, chose to field many first teamers in preparation for the forthcoming Royal London One-Day Cup campaign.

A century from Chesney Hughes was the mainstay of their 254-9 and then Worcestershire, who had taken five points from their previous three games, were bowled out for 173 with more than 10 overs remaining.

Derbyshire elected to bat and Chris Russell had Wes Durston caught behind without a run on the board.

But Chesney Hughes and Shiv Thakor added 113 in 19 overs for the fourth wicket.

Chesney Hughes hit 117 off 119 balls with one six and 15 fours before being caught at cover and Thakor 43 before wickets started to tumble.

Spinner Shaaiq Choudhry dismissed Chesney Hughes and picked up three more wickets to finish with figures of 4-35 while Alex Hepburn – 2-39 in nine overs – bowled an economical spell.

When Worcestershire replied Alex Gidman, who had bowled a rare six overs, top-scored with 36 and Ed Barnard and Choudhry contributed 31 apiece.
